Pumphreys coffee supplying Java Coffee Beans to the UK.

Java is a coffee drinker's coffee – with a full rich body, nice acid balance, and a subtle multi-dimensional aromatic character. Matured to produce a full rich body with a nice acid balance

The Dutch first brought Arabica coffee trees to these islands in the mid-17th century, known then as the Netherlands Indies. Cultivation proved so successful that "Java" was exported globally and hence "Java" became a synonym for all types of coffee. Java's government regulates the export of coffee and forbids Robusta beans to be sold as Java coffee – only premium Arabica beans can bear the Java name.

Indonesia is the second largest producer of robusta in the world after Vietnam and also produces a small but important amount of high quality arabica, with production concentrated in Sumatra and Java. Sumatran coffee has become increasingly valued over the past few years, offering good body coupled with a sweet spicey acidity. Sumatran coffee has a main crop and a fly crop.

Indonesia is effectively a huge archipelago, with islands stretching from Sumatra (the largest of the country’s islands) in the west over to Irian Jaya (part of which also comprises Papua New Guinea). Among its population of about 238 million people there is a strong sense of regional identity that has led to numerous internal conflicts, notably East Timor, which eventually won independence in the early 1990s and, more recently, the Aceh province in the north of Sumatra.

A mellow all rounder an everyday coffee. I usually put 2 shots in a cappuccino to get the strength I want. Nice aroma and well balanced

We’ve surviving lockdown, thanks to delicious coffee from Pumphrey’s! OBJ has been our go-to morning cuppa as it’s a smooth coffee. It’s not too acidic or bold. Just right! We enjoy this blend in our french press daily.

I rate this the third best coffee in the world, behind Indonesian civet coffee and Jamaican Blue Mountain. I've been drinking it or Old Sibolga for over 25 years!
