The Dutch first brought Arabica coffee trees to these islands in the mid-17th century, known then as the Netherlands Indies. Cultivation proved so successful that "Java" was exported globally and hence "Java" became a synonym for all types of coffee. Java's government regulates the export of coffee and forbids Robusta beans to be sold as Java coffee – only premium Arabica beans can bear the Java name.
Indonesia is the second largest producer of robusta in the world after Vietnam and also produces a small but important amount of high quality arabica, with production concentrated in Sumatra and Java. Sumatran coffee has become increasingly valued over the past few years, offering good body coupled with a sweet spicey acidity. Sumatran coffee has a main crop and a fly crop.
Indonesia is effectively a huge archipelago, with islands stretching from Sumatra (the largest of the country’s islands) in the west over to Irian Jaya (part of which also comprises Papua New Guinea). Among its population of about 238 million people there is a strong sense of regional identity that has led to numerous internal conflicts, notably East Timor, which eventually won independence in the early 1990s and, more recently, the Aceh province in the north of Sumatra.
We like to have a range of different single origin coffees in the house to match our moods and time of day. This is one we always have available, it is just so beautifully smooth and works well for expresso and with cream.
A lovely mellow flavour. Easy to drink. Worth a second cup.
A nice coffe anytime of day
A full bodied coffee that I am happy to drink at any time of day. Great as a black coffee (no bitterness at all) and also with milk or cream. Definitely one I'd recommend.
