Pumphreys coffee supplying Java Coffee Beans to the UK.

Java is a coffee drinker's coffee – with a full rich body, nice acid balance, and a subtle multi-dimensional aromatic character. Matured to produce a full rich body with a nice acid balance

The Dutch first brought Arabica coffee trees to these islands in the mid-17th century, known then as the Netherlands Indies. Cultivation proved so successful that "Java" was exported globally and hence "Java" became a synonym for all types of coffee. Java's government regulates the export of coffee and forbids Robusta beans to be sold as Java coffee – only premium Arabica beans can bear the Java name.

Indonesia is the second largest producer of robusta in the world after Vietnam and also produces a small but important amount of high quality arabica, with production concentrated in Sumatra and Java. Sumatran coffee has become increasingly valued over the past few years, offering good body coupled with a sweet spicey acidity. Sumatran coffee has a main crop and a fly crop.

Indonesia is effectively a huge archipelago, with islands stretching from Sumatra (the largest of the country’s islands) in the west over to Irian Jaya (part of which also comprises Papua New Guinea). Among its population of about 238 million people there is a strong sense of regional identity that has led to numerous internal conflicts, notably East Timor, which eventually won independence in the early 1990s and, more recently, the Aceh province in the north of Sumatra.

    Old Brown Java

The replacement for Old Sibolga and, in my opinion, the third best coffee in the world.

    Anything else a disappointment

Since discovering these beans in a sample back I was gifted, I have found it the only coffee that regularly hits the spot for me. I was able to give up sugar as I was only using it to mask the task of other coffees, which it not what I want with this coffee.

Earthy, sweet, chocolate. True depth of flavour in what is our daily grind. We've tried the rest, and now stick to the best.

Lovely, uniform tan roast. Sweet, aromatic, with savoury and chocolate undertones. Delicious.

    A winner of a coffee

I always buy 3 kilo bags of coffee when I order from pumphreys, and old brow java is always one of them. Excellent for those who like coffee strong but not overpowering - perfect for espresso.

Always come back to this one

We like to have a range of different single origin coffees in the house to match our moods and time of day. This is one we always have available, it is just so beautifully smooth and works well for expresso and with cream.

    One of my favourites

A full bodied coffee that I am happy to drink at any time of day. Great as a black coffee (no bitterness at all) and also with milk or cream. Definitely one I'd recommend.

    Nice but polite

A nice drink, rich brown when ground and probably a number 3 in my head. Pleasant but not mind-blowing. Recommended for evening coffee. Thanks.

Probably one of the nicest coffees I've ever had. I drink it black and fairly strong - it is never too sharp. People always comment that it smells nice, too.
