Sir Donald Curry visits our Factory & Showroom for  the Taste North East Strategic Board Meeting 2011

We took great delight in showing our guests around the factory including viewing our coffee being Freshly Roasted using our traditional Open Flame Roaster. They experienced what we are all about & followed the whole process from green beans to the perfect cup of coffee, prepared by our Award Winning Baristas, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Sir Donald Curry (Middle) is joined here by Mr Stuart Lee Archer (Barista Training Centre Manager) & Miss Paula Jean Archer (Sales & Marketing Manager)

We were delighted to also welcome Sir Donald Curry on the day; he joined the Taste North East Group Board in November 2009 and said the following:

‘The North East’s food and drink sector is currently an emerging force in the UK market. I believe that the strength of our regional food offering, which incorporates a powerful combination of award winning producers, national retailers and top chefs, has the potential to become internationally renowned and a driving force for visitors to the North East, as well as a major contributor to the economic well-being of the region’.

Sir Donald Curry is a leading Government adviser on agriculture, environment, & food issues, who continues to farm 450 acres in Northumberland comprising arable and lowland grass. He agreed to chair Taste North East, the regional food & drink group, when the strategic board was created in 2009.

Nationally, his roles include chairing a Policy Commission on the ‘Future of Farming and Food’, which reported to government in January 2002 and saw a major shift in Government thinking, then chaired the group overseeing delivery of the Sustainable Farming and Food Strategy until 2009. A former Crown Estate Commissioner and chair of the Meat & Livestock Commission (1993-2001), he was appointed to the Council of Food Policy Advisors in 2009, awarded a CBE for his services to agriculture in 1997, and knighted in 2001. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by Cranfield, Gloucestershire and Newcastle Universities.

Currently Sir Donald is Chairman of the NFU Mutual Insurance Company and of the Leckford Estate Management Committee (the Waitrose farm) and also heads up the Better Regulation Executive, which is looking to reduce the burden of red tape on business.

Here at Pumphreys we are proud to be associated with such passionate regional food and beverage producers in the North East of England.

Northumbrian Larder Chairman Mr. Henry W Roberts said this after the visit ‘many thanks for the excellent way that you handled the visit by Sir Donald Curry, myself and the rest of the Taste North East Strategic Board.

Both very professional and extremely enjoyable—so please pass on my / our appreciation to all those involved’.

We look forward to welcoming the Taste North East Strategic Board in the near future.
