Making Coffee

There are numerous machines and electrical coffee makers available today, many of which will produce an excellent cup of coffee if you follow the makers instructions. Pumphreys sells a range of coffee makers see our Coffee Machines section for details.

Whether you use the now "old fashioned" electric percolator, an electric filter coffee machine or the most expensive espresso machine you can buy, the basic principles remain the same.

Don't forget:

  • Store your coffee in an airtight container;
  • Always use coffee which has been freshly roasted, preferably by Pumphreys;
  • Use freshly drawn cold water;
  • One dessert spoon full of coffee per cup is normal;
  • Never let coffee boil.

Here are some great ways to make coffee without any machines or coffee makers:

Jug Method

  1. Measure coffee into a warmed jug or cafetiere.
  2. Add boiling water.
  3. Stir and leave to stand for 3-4 minutes.
  4. If using a cafetiere, push plunger half way down only.
  5. After 3-4 minutes push plunger all the way down and serve.
  6. Serve with strainer if using a jug.

Filter Method

  1. Measure coffee into a filter paper.
  2. Place filter paper into a plastic filter cone.
  3. Stand filter cone on top of a warmed jug or pot.
  4. Pour boiling water evenly over the coffee.
  5. Allow coffee to filter through into the pot.
